Bombardier SWs and cooling fan

When I bought my SW-48 1973 with the Dodge flathead, the owner told me that the fan had been reinstalled the wrong way and that I should change it. It was blowing air out the back. It is now sucking air in and out the rad. Is this correct?

no, normally they blow air out the back so they do not plug up with grass, cattails, etc. but one important thing you must have the side engine panels on or it will pull in from the sides and not through the rad. and overheat. one thing also it overreved if will blow the top of the valve off you should leave the govenor on if it had it.

Boggie, the rad is on top of the engine on this one, not in the back. I think I have a picture of it. Also, where is this governor everyone is talking about? Do you have a picture???

That is the way all older SW48 all rad on top, air blows out the back draws in through the rad on top if you leave the sides off then it will not draw through the rad, also under your seat should be a tin panel so it does not draw air from the cab, which in most cases it would not but you are missing the windows so I think it could be avoiding the movement of air through the rad. try a paper test close everything up and place a chunk of cardboard just above the rad in your hand see if it pulls it tin toward the rad. you could have the rad pluged with pine neddles or leaves or something blow it out from underneath

the govenor is the small unit directly below the carb. about 1" thick it looks like it is there can not see real well in your pic.

turning a fan around does does not make it blow the other way. if incorrect you need a different pitched fan. look at the blades when you turn it they are still going the same way.

Boggie, I humbly apologize for making such an a$$ of myself on that question. Thanks N E ways for the confirmation.

You did not make an arse of yourself, at all, your just learning. do not be afraid to ask questions. without that none of would know anything. I rember my first SW48 I was so excited, bought three thinking I could get two running ended up getting all three running. hell after 30 plus years of cats I'm still learning things.

Thanks for being understanding. Here is a couple of pics of the manifold side. Can you see the governor? Also, after 2 days of long work, got the sprocket changed. The book is wrong, why is the axle welded to the exterior plate? I had to take the entire axle assy out to replace a sprocket. Is that normal? It had to be done for sure, there were 4 teeth missing on that sprocket.:w00t2: New fluid in the differential also makes a difference, better turning now!

Yep the Governor body is there, most likely the plate is inside, not always
on the SW48 they are welded at the factory and the sprocket goes to the inside, on the J-5 they are on the outside . what fluid did you put in? should use trans-hydraulic not 80-90w and even though Bombardier said in the later years to use ATF fluid we do not recommend it but it sells ring and pinions :brows:

Pixie - Thanks, coming from a master fabricator like you, yup, I like to do things right. But I told my daughter today that I will be spending more time with her this month and save the big over haul for next fall. The only thing I want to get working is the winky-dink on top :w00t2:. More snow expected tomorow and Thursday. Yeah!

Boggie - I followed the instructions in the thread and put a couple of gallons of trans hydraulic fluid I got from my brother in-law who works at Caterpillar. I wasn't expecting the diff to leak out when I removed the axle and housing. It didn't on the M113 that I drove alot while in the army reserves. Compared to this differential, the one in the M113 could lock one of the tracks and pivot off of that track and there was a disk brake on each axle. Although the previous owner painted it olive green, this isn't a tank (or APC).:yum:

good job the m113 steers the same as your sw with brake bands in the differential each latteral controls a band the brake discs on the output shafts are for your piviot steer wich should have been disabled as that feature was deemed un necessary and hard in the tracks however the piviot steer made a nice pad for the 10 man arctic tent.

dds - That's right, those where the hooks above the telebars. But I'm sure that yanking hard on a telebar made the APC pivot. The engine was much bigger and so was the diff. and I remember changing out a sprocket, much easier than on the SW...hehehe

dds - Yup, don't know if you had the same 10 man tent as us Canucks, easier than with snow shoes. Had to look up AK because I was convince that was Arkansas, but man was I wrong when I copied your location and plugged it into Google maps. You're way up there! But I think we have more snow than you do, judging from that video you posted. Been busy doing all the little things that needed to be done on my new machine, like installing the missing crosslinks, hooking up the winky-dink, rechecking all the fluids and acting like Homer on that episode where they called him Mr. Plow! We just had about 6 cm fall in the last 24h, so I've been using my new toy a lot. I have to get the wife to video some time...hahaha
boggie - you look like a busy man with those big trucks. Hope all goes well for ya. To answer your question about the windows, they came with the purchase of the SW. The previous owner said he had them done by a pal in a window shop (slightly tinted) but when I came to install them, there is not enough metal left on the doors to rivet or screw them in. I will do something with that when it is warmer. For now, I'm having a blast. The freezing fog was a little annoying yesterday without the defrost function...hahaha
