Bombardier Engine Change

Hello again everyone

I have a 1961 Bombardier Muskeg J7 that has a 1968 265ci flathead six Chrysler Industrial engine in it. To say the least finding parts for this motor is always a challenge. Does anyone know of a retorfit diesel engine that would work well in this old chassis? Better yet does anyone know of a supplier of things of this nature? We are in Maine so travel and shipping is always an issue (last of the food chain). Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Jim Quimby.:tiphat:

Now you went and changed my is this for calling you Mouse eared Mike?

That should be a 251 Chrysler industrial if it original we have parts for them.
The exhaust manifold it hard to come by. other than that we have most parts and complete engines.

A perkins 4.236 Diesel was another option for these machines we have also put Ford industrial 300 gas engines in these with a C-6

Hi Jim,
I have a thiokol I am putting a 4 cyl john deere mated to an allison at-545 . I found the engine in a tow behind air-compressor w/low hours , and the trans out of a school bus. The only problem was locating a sae #3 bell and a flywheel for the torque convertor.
These guys can help www.bellpower.com or www.camerota.com they are in the northeast, But I think if I were to do it again I would get a complete set up out of a bus with an older 6 cyl cummins ( mechanical) and get the shifter and everything else you might need , if you can.
Depending on how much power you need you can find a 4cyl cummins in a chevy p-30 step-van with a chevy bolt pattern.....these are becoming real hard to get as everyone is looking for these for jeep, durango, chevy pickup -engine swaps. My 2 1/2 cents . Hope this helps ... Jeff

I'd stay with the 251. Have operated the M7 with 318 Chrysler industrial and with the 4 cyl Perkins. But with the J7 ,the motor is right up there with you in the cab so I don't know if there is room for the 318 ? I don't think I'd like the 4 cyl Perkins in the cab with me. It's been a few years but I recall there is a gear housing that transfers the drive back to the diff and The ones I worked with had gear driven winches that I believe were driven from a PTO on the side of the trans. All of that may limit what type of engine you use, if you have a winch etc. Industrial engines are still out there as they were used in a variety of applications. I was able to get a 265 ci which is the same block with a bit more stroke and a few more horsepower. As I recall the gearing was such that the 251 was adequate. Just my opinion.

Thanks a ton for the info. Where are you getting the Chrysler Industrial Parts? I really need an exhuast manifod/ exhaust up for the 251 I have. We had it welded but I think it is hanging on a thread. Thanks Jim Quimby Saddleback Maine

Yes the manifolds are a problem and with the J7 you cannot have any exhaust leaking or you will perish in the cab. The fan pulls through but the engine compartment is far from airtight. For industrial motors and parts look for agricultural combine graveyards. Here in western Canada there are a lot of towns with tractor/Combine Salvage yards and since the 251 and 265's were used in a variety of farm machinery you may find what you need. I was able to get a good starter 12 volt from Combine World in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. I'd do a search of your mid west states and see what is out there. Good luck.

Was just looking at the Allpar site and I see that in the united states the designation for 251 Chrysler Industrial Engines is Ind.8 and the 265 was Ind.32 if that is any help. They were used in a lot of other ind applications such as street sweepers and cement mixers etc. good luck

I was told today that Rod Alexander of Alexanders Auto Ranch in Flin Flon has a seviceable Manifold for $200 cdn 204- 687-4567 but that is a long way from Maine and I don't know the logistics..tax , shipping ,duty??? etc.
