Black Grade 10 Bolts

I have a question for you wise experienced machinist type guys.

I needed some Metric Bolts for some wheel spacers I had made so after going to three hardware stores I found a place that actually had the size I needed but they were "Grade 10" bolts with a black finish.

Here's my question: Are these things going to rust on me? They don't look zinc coated but maybe the flat black finish is just cosmetic.

Yes - they were expensive ($5.70 each) but I was beaten down and tired of driving from store to store.

I guess if they start rusting I'll just pull them out and paint them or something.

The finish is most likely a simple black oxide, which does have the possibility of rusting. Black oxide is fairly easily damaged, and you will see rusting in the areas where the finish is scratched or scarred.

Are you sure the bolts aren't ISO R898 Class 10.9? I have never heard of SAE J429 Grade 10 (Grade 8 is the highest.)

The bin said "Grade 10" which I'm not familiar with.

I had to buy a box and the box says:

10.9 Fine Thread HHCS
Orig: Poland

So I guess they are Class 10.9 - What's the diff?

Thanks too!

Class 10.9 is an ISO (International Standards Organization) specification, Grade 8 is a SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) specification.

Your Class 10.9 bolts should be equivalant to a Grade 8. (150K psi min tensile strength) :thumb:

You may want to try and find a Fastenal supplier in your area. I buy from them at work and they have pretty good pricing and response. Probably would have had those in stock....

you have my sympathy for hunting for them.. been there myself..

The place I got them from is pretty good. They usually have just about everything. I think there display was from Fastenal. My local NAPA actually had nice zinc coated ones for less but they only had 6 and I needed 12. I should have gone back and bought the six but like I said - I was tired of driving around.

I just got the wheel spacers made so I could get my new chains on my tractor and we are supposed to get snow on Wednesday so I want to get everything done today. I suspect if the black finish starts to rust I will just take them off, polish them and paint them. It's a tractor - a little rust isn't going to hurt.

Wash them with soapy water before use, and then put some anti seize on the threads. After they are installed, then paint the heads the color of the wheel. No rust, no fuss......
