Best dog

There's a lot more that needs to be considered when getting a dog.

Each breed has different levels of energy, space requirements, exercise, grooming, weather tolerance...

Does she live in the country or city? What's the climate?

Also remember that many mutts make good dogs as well.

She is in the country. Kids are a 5 month old, a 2 year old and a 5 year old. Lives in Kansas. Wants a dog that can run but yet will also be a house dog.

Black lab, golden retriever. Big dogs, usually tolerant of kids and very protective. Need room to run and if you have a lab, they will go for water like a duck to a junebug.

I would suggest a lab also be advised that lab mutts make some of the best dogc just lost my lab husky mix this winter after 16 years. this is the second lab mix I have had they were both protective and loyal especially around kids. MacArthur used to to herd Timmy our youngest back if he ventured off too far. labs are known for soft mouths too like all retrievers so stuff that goes in to their mouths usually doesn't come out mutilated. I would go with a lab but better yet a lab mutt I have my 3 rd now Boss Dog

and here is a pic of Boss Dog being a house dog my wife will kill me if she ever finds out I posted this

Can't go wrong with a Lab...

Mine is a Lab mix. Great family dog and very protective of the kids.

I agree with the Lab or Lab mix as well. Very smart and trustworthy dogs, with a great attitude. And will protect if they need too. The key to a good dog is the owner, and how much they work with and talk too the dog. I have seen many breeds do well with what is being asked here, but only because the owner did what it took to teach the dog what is wanted. Some people dont have what it takes to do that... or they won't take the time.

Regards, Kirk

Couldn't agree more with that.

As far as the OP in concerned, there is no need to go past the first two on your list and that's from a guy that's never had anything other than lab mixes.

Probably the best house/kid dog I ever saw was my son's Scottish Deerhound. It's big but very low activity inside the house but don't let it run free or it'll be in the next county before you know it. It's a useless protection dog, except for the kids. It'll let a burgler in the house and he'll have to step over it carrying stuff out the door. The kids are a different story. The utility guy came on their property to read the meter and tried to pick up my granddaughter. The dog had him in a corner, on it's hind legs with a paw on either shoulder and they were eye to eye and she had that low growl going. That guy literally pissed himself.

As a another benefit, it'll also keep you supplied with rabbits. :yum:

Lab or lab cross , Go to the pound . Great dogs !!!
My 50 pounds of love . Likes other dogs big and small and cats too . No stranger will get near the kids without her barking and standing her ground . I would never want to piss her off !
