Anita, American Black Bears have a really wild weight range. Males will range from about 200# up to about 600#, females can be as light as 125# to roughly 450#. Standing on their hind legs, they average 4.5' to 6' tall.
One big problem with them is they are pretty darn cute and in tourist areas people think they are not dangerous. I once saw a lady walk up to one and reach out and feed it a stick of gum. She was very fortunate to keep her hand! The biggest problem with that type of activity is the bears lose their fear of man, and become major pests, up to the point that someone gets hurt. Then the only option is to kill the bear. Despite their antics, they even little black bears are very powerful creatures. They range far and wide in the US and are probably more common than most people think.
