Back Tax

Deadly Sushi

The One, The Only, Sushi
OK what do you folks think? Supposedly I owe the state of Illinois $124 bucks from taxes in 2005. Now I dont ever remember getting a notice till a few months ago. I thought I paid! The idiot that I am I didnt pay immediatly. I waited a month. The next notice was from an attorneys office saying I NOW owe $240. :4_11_9: I checked to see if I had a check in the above amount cashed. Nothing. I guess they lost the check or I never paid it. :pat: So now I have to pay the $240. :( I even called the State and said I want to pay my back tax of $124. I told them the situation and they went through the standard shit of its MY responsibility to make sure my taxes were paid. So now people have to confirm their check was cashed? :confused2:
Anyhow, the State would NOT allow me to pay! I now have to pay the attorneys office the full $240. Grrrrrrr......

Face it Sushi, you are just a non-paying deadbeat!

Oh, and now you know why I live on the Indiana side of the Indiana/Illinois state line. You guys over there are crazy with your taxes and laws!!! Most of my neighbors are refugees from the Land of Lincoln.

When dealing with with government, local, state or federal the policy is always

"Guilty until proven innocent"

:shitHitFan: And the burden of proof is always on you, my friend:shitHitFan:

Pay now before penalties grow some more. (Or give them proof of payment if you have proof.)

At the same time, file an appeal it if there is some rational scenario you think you can persuade the tax people to consider.

Whatever you do, don't just ignore the demand. This thing could snowball if neglected.

Or, ignore California's good advice, wait another month and then let us know what federal jail they have you locked up in because in 30 days the fine will probably be so large that they will repossess your whole life :shitHitFan:

That was not fair nor necessary to say. :( I do the best I can. :( I thought I paid. Honestly and at face value, what you said is extemely hurtful to me Bob. Im not wanting to sound like a wuss-bag here. But youre basically calling me scum. And deadbeat!??!? Hell of a thing to tell a man that has had a brutally tough patch(s) and has just paid off his credit card bills by eatting pasta for 4 days straight to save money.

OK guys....I'm just as guilty, but according to the rules, this is the serious forum.

Serious Discussion only. No joking or smart-alecky remarks.

Sushi has presented an issue, and received good advice from California. Lets keep it sane in here.

Hey DS, you've got me confused here.
Did you get a notice or not? Did you pay or not?
Did you file IL taxes in '05? Did you submit a payment with your return? Did they say you didn't do your taxes right and send a notice saying you owe another $124?

I agree with others that say the system is really messed up. You need to pay immediately or face penalty yet they can take forever to give back a refund if it's coming without penalty or interest.

I'd make the payment as required and follow California's advise so long as making payment doesn't come with an implication or assumption of guilt.

I've fielded some issues like this before and the bottom line is that the taxes must be paid.
Case law even says that notice to pay is not required.
This applies to income as well as property tax.

Penalties and interest add up quick
Verry True !!!
Pay the bill before it goes up again . I fought for 2 years over a 941 deposit . That ended up costing me $2000 and I had the proof I had paid it(Canceled Check) . The penalties will eat your ass off and no one will listen .

Ok folks. I paid today.
I did file the 2005 taxes. At the time I probably didnt have enough money in the bank to safely pay the $140. Im guessing I forgot about it. So years later I get my first (that I know of) letter to pay up. then the next month I got the collectors notice of $240. I was PISSSSSED! I should have called the State the next day. But i waited. Ehhhhh. Its my fault.
