ASUS Netbook Laptop

The Old Salt
Picked up a used ASUS Netbook Laptop for 20 bucks. It has an Intel Atom processor, 2 gigs of RAM. The hardware is great. Looks to be hardly used.

The owner says it is infected with viruses and malware, so I restored it back to the original configuration and it runs great. Windows XP Home Service Pack 3.

However, I bought this with every intention of installing Ubuntu Version 14 on it .
So, I downloaded Ubuntu from their web site as an .iso disc image. Then used a software to create a bootable USB stick. The reason I used USB is because the ASUS has not CD ROM drive.

However, the bios in the ASUS will not permit it to boot from USB. I have tried everything I can think of, but no go. A google confirmed for me that indeed this netbook will not boot from USB.

Anyone with any thoughts?

Is it possible to use another computer with a CD drive as a terminal and then boot through the slave terminal?

My computer repair skills are limited to remembering the phone number of my IT guy, but a few years ago he did something like that to bootleg a program onto a new computer.

I have an ancient (still has a floppy drive) desktop that ran XP. I wanted it to run UBUNTU and had no luck. So I tried a light weight version of UBUNTU called LUBUNTU
it wasn't easy but I got it to run. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lubuntu I think I had to install if from a disk (that I had copied Lubuntu onto from another computer) then run it. I couldn't get to boot from an USB stick. It's free software and since you only spent 20 bucks for the laptop it's worth a try.

Are there any other ports besides USB? I vaguely remember being able to fool the computer into thinking the USB drive was an extra hard drive but dang if I can remmeber how I did that. There are external CD or DVD players that you can plug into USB ....I wonder if they would work. If i still have one I could ship it to you to try if you want. I have not used it in a long time so ....I would have to dig a little but I think I could find it.

Thanx everyone!

I got it!! Turns out these little netbooks can be picky. At least the bios can. They really like it when you create a bootable disc image from a utility called Universal Net Boot Installer. Once I created a bootable disc image of Ubuntu with that, there was a second option in bios. It said the the first boot device was the HDD. Second, Kingston USB, my flash drive. Tada. It never said that before!! Changed it to USB #1 and I was off and running.

The process was easy and straightforward. I partitioned the 160GB HD in two, with Windows on one and Ubuntu on the other. The first install did not go according to Hoyle as the Grub boot installer did not install so after a reboot, Windows would start with no option for Ubuntu even though it showed the HD was partitioned. So, one more try and sure enough Grub installed this time and I now have the option on startup which OS I want. Perfect.

Congrats!!!!!!! Way to go!

Yeah, this is working good. Only thing so far is bluetooth will not connect to anything, but I will look into that further later on. I rarely use bluetooth for anything outside of the car.

The Atom processor is no speed demon, but adequate for basic use.

for 20 bucks you got a heck of a deal. :thumb:
