Arresting parents who allow children to ride bikes to school!?!

The police in Tennessee have now deemed allowing a child to bicycle to school to be parental neglect. I'm just glad America is not becoming a police state or anything :ermm:

Bike Walk Tennessee: Arrested for Riding Bike to School
Could you be arrested for allowing your 5'th grade child to ride her bike one mile to school? That certainly seems crazy as we try to encourage active life styles for our kids. That certainly seems crazy as we try to promote safe routes to school programs. That certainly seems crazy as we talk of an obesity epidemic amongst our children. But that is what police in Elizabethton Tennessee are threatening.

Teresa Tryon said, "On August 25th my 10 year daughter arrived home via police officer, requested to speak to me on the front porch of my home. The officer informed me that in his 'judgement' it was unsafe for my daughter to ride her bike to school."

Ms Tryon called the mayor's office and the chief of police office in order to determine what laws she was breaking by allowing her daughter to ride her bike to school. Her daughter's route to school was reasonably safe.

Major Verran of the police department returned Ms Tryon's call. She said he told me, "He had spoke with the District Attorney's office who advised that until the officer can speak with Child Protective Services that if I allow my daughter to ride/walk to school I will be breaking the law and treated accordingly.

She asked, "What law she would be breaking to which the answer was 'child neglect'".

Ms Tryon confirm with Major Verran that her daughter was indeed breaking no laws at any level, but it was Ms Tryon who was breaking the law by allowing her daughter to ride/walk to school. Even though it only takes her daughter 7 - 9 minutes to bicycle to school, she is expected to ride the bus.

What? Isn't that how a bunch of kids USED to get to school? Isn't that why there are bike racks outside? I don't see the problem, unless the school is on an interstate. Which is highly unlikely...

What kind of dumbfuck society is this?!

I read the comment trail at the link above. What a sad state of affairs.

Another perfect example of Police abusing their powers and their mandate from society.

My elementary school had tons of bike racks which were full every day. It was a rare event to get a ride to school from a parent or even ride a bus.

Just a bit of follow up.

FIRST, in the comments it is reported that the school does, in fact, have bike racks for students.

SECOND, it strikes me that this child is now relegated to riding the gubmint approved, seatbeltless, bus to school at the same time that the gubmint is releasing all sorts of reports that childhood OBESITY is a problem because kids don't get any exercise.

Inquisitive, isn't it?

We rode bikes to school till high school. Too many kids spend too much time sitting on their asses and then they wonder why they get so fat. They should encourage bike riding instead of this dumb shit.

When I was growing up you couldn't ride your bike to school until you made it to 3rd grade. We thought we were really something once we got to ride our bikes to school everyday. I remember being upset a few times when my parents insisted on driving me to school when there was 18" of snow on the ground. My middle and high schools were about five miles away so riding the bus was mandatory.

Parental neglect would be driving your obese kids to school everyday instead of making him ride his bike.

I've made less than 20 posts on this forum and I've already a few ideas for some new articles (from here and other topics). Thanks for making this post.

Well we dont want any of them kids to turn out like Lance Armsrong now would we. He did start riding his bike to school at 5 in fact he necer got to achool any other way Gee the Tour De France is extremely dangerous and hey we really dont want to attack this obesity thing in kids either. Gee what are you guys thinking.
