Lines formed at 5am Friday morning waiting for them to go on sale Saturday morning in New York City. The Ipad's do look kinda neat, but I don't see one in my near future. I wonder about the data plan for it. The data plan sure costs for the Iphone, I expect it will be similar or more for the Ipad.

My wife wanted a Kindle really bad, but we decided to wait for the iPad. We may be getting one soon.

I have no need for one. I think they are for the Apple fan-boys and the less technically savvy crowd that has lots of disposable income.

It wont be Me , I have a hard enough time with this thing :w00t2:
I think it might be easier to use than PC's. But it's also limited. So far reviewers are saying it's good for web browsing, email, and, like Rob mentioned, it interfaces with Kindle very well and can serve as an ebook reader standalone (like a Kindle).
Another big advantage to it is that all the semi cool apps that work on the iPhone will now have more real estate to play with which will result in more quality apps for all kinds of things. I predict this will help drive a huge demand for this iPad.

I know the geek in me wants one, but I'll wait and see how this all plays out. I was surprised at the price ($500 to $800). Heck, just a little more than the iPhones were when they came out.

My wife wanted a Kindle really bad, but we decided to wait for the iPad. We may be getting one soon.

My daughter wanted an ebook reader too. We looked at the Kindle, the Sony eReader and the Barns & Noble Nook. Bought the Nook. A friend has the Kindle. Both provide the same experience but interface with the user a bit differently.

Then the iPad was announced. It will do a whole lot more, but at what cost? By cost I do not mean the actual selling price. I mean the experience of the user.

If you want an ebook reader, the glossy screen of the iPad will be reflective and have glare and it will not be particularly useful in the bright sunshine reading out by the pool because the screen type is most suitable for use indoors. The operating system on the iPad is likely to be more responsive during page turns and the interface is likely to be more friendly. But the battery life of the iPad will be measured in hours rather than DAYS for many ebook readers.

So if your wife is an avid reader, have her go to Barnes & Noble or Borders and try out the Nook or the Sony eReader and see if she likes the experience. Have her ask herself what the real use of the device will be. If she wants an ebook then maybe the iPad is the wrong choice, but if she wants an all-in-one device that give her a calender, an email reader, an ebook, a websurfer, a notebook, an address book and a whole lot more then the iPad will be the best choice even if it may have some limits as an ebook reader.

Now for whatever it is worth, I could easily switch to one of those. I have a MacBookPro with tons of RAM and more storage than I'll ever use but only use this computer for websurfing, photo storage and email. I have a desktop that also is used for those same things plus a few more so I could easily give up my MacBookPro for an iPad. That may be something I will do in the future, but I have no plans to run out for an iPad anytime soon.

Seems to me there are 2 things that I don't like about the iPad.

1) there is no print function
2) it does not allow for Adobe Flash programming to play video (other video formats will work but Adobe Flash is common in web design and used on most news webpages)

Reasons NOT to get an Ipad.

1) The Name Ipad:yum: Come on now.
2) It's nothing but a giant Ipod touch.
3) No Flash support. NOT the ultimate web browsing experience.
4) No USB, no camera, no phone? LOL!
5) Does not multitask.
6) No replaceable battery.
7) If you have a Iphone, or a Ipod touch, or a net book.. you have a better solution already.

Reasons to get an Ipad.

1) Steve says its an amazing wonderful "magical" device.
2) You want to be locked in on Apple's view of:
You can only run our version of what the web is (no flash) and buy apps from the apps store.
3) You are a apple fan boy/girl.

Just for fun:

OK on a serious note . . .
Regarding point 2 - I'd have to say that is exactly why it is attractive.
Regarding point 3 - Yes, this is a major shortcoming
Regarding point 4 - it docks and the dock connects via USB to another device so that's sort of a minor issue. But as for no Camera or Phone, that criticism seems silly. Do you really want a phone or a camera that would be the size of a tablet? I wouldn't.
Regarding point 5 - this is not really a big issue but people who want this device to be something else than it is may try to argue it is an issue?
Regarding point 6 - Kindle, Nook and other eReaders also suffer from this supposed problem. But given the 10 hour battery life of the iPad compared to 2 to 4 hours for a "net book" it seems like a silly criticism.
Regarding point 7 - I believe that claim is inaccurate in too many ways to even respond.

I still think the inability to send something on the screen to a printer is big problem, apparently others don't because I don't see that criticism levied by too many reviewers.

I pointed out that a simple USB port on the I pad that a printer would plug into would be nice. BUT IS MISSING. But you say: Regarding point 4 - it docks and the dock connects via USB to another device so that's sort of a minor issue.
So what's the issue? I said it had no USB.. and you say it "docks" to USB. So what is the problem?

Well the dock has a USB that connects to a computer, but not to something like a printer. So there are limits to how the USB works on the iPad.

My son (my live-in IT Dept.) and his friend went to play with them at the Apple store. He was unimpressed for a $500 entry price, but did say if it were $250 he would buy one.

FWIW, we have 2 MacBooks, 1 MacBool Pro and an I-Mac G5. We love them.
