Does anybody know about the old antique "cannonball" safes? It appears that these safes were made for banks and other businesses between the late 1800's to early 1900's. They are made of about 1' thick solid steel and are rounded on the top, thus the "cannonball" nickname. I have an opportunity to buy a really nice one in complete working condition. This one has the bottom drawer that holds the crank handle that screws the 1 foot thick steel door closed and I would have the combination. It weighs just over 5700 pounds. Any info that can be provided would be appreciated.

They are heavy and that makes them good. They are difficult to move, and that makes them good. They are worth a few pennies per pound and that is good. Did I say that they are good safes.... much better than the safes that I used to use. They broke very easily and were never large enough to hold the full deposit, and that was bad. :thumb:
