Another J5 Alaska adventure

I ended up blowing a tire going up to camp on my front tire. The machine was skipping the track so I continued. With the big load and wrong past taken the j5 was stuck in the swamp. When backing I broke the hitch off my poor trailer (will need more steel). so I put some trees in the hole and drove through without the trailer. That machine is awesome when its not pulling a load. 4 foot of slop was a piece of cake. Used a strap to tow, luckily its all up hill. finally made it to camp and ghetto foam filled tire(didn't last long). the view of Mt Mckinley (I will not call it Denali just because Obama changed the name) was well worth it.

The machine looks much better than when I originally procured it in Maine at the Pistonbully dealers lot, in 95. Glad to see it out and in it's element!
 
Be careful with heavy top loads on a J5. I tried to put a moose quarter in the rack above the cab and quickly abandoned the idea. Those machines are built to pull!! A trailer is the place to put the weight. They are an awesome tundra machine. Did you get to load it up with moose this year?

IMP I put a whole moose on the top last year and climbed hills my king quad couldn't without flipping. Did not see any game while I was at camp. Weird year. I need to get a army trailer like yours. My ATV trailer rips in half every time I take it. The J5 is so strong I don't feel anything when it catches. The J5 handled very well with the load but might be hard on the undercarrige. Seems like it could handle the load though considering the RED RAM would load a cord of wood on its back.
Lyndon thanks for noticing Your old J5 I really like the machine and trying to take care of it so It will be around for another 50+ years. Ordered 2 new tires for the from from Alpine tires and will have them foam filled. I did that with the rears after having a flat in the rear. Breaking apart a track in 40deg F rain is not fun. :sad:

That's amazing You put a whole moose up top! It felt way to tippy for my comfort level. but I Guess it depends on the terrain. I had a moose and a half plus a deluxe moose camp in and 80 gal of gas and I still had room in my wagon this year. Had the best J5 moose of my life so far this year! Was Epic!!
 
IMP make a thread with your j5 hunt please. I have been waiting all year for more videos. I had the same problem with losing power with my motor going up or down hill. Had to replace the fuel line in tank. Braze copper to fitting worked great and no more hesitation or stalling.
I found a trailer like yours I'm going to try to pick up next week.

Perfect! Excellent find!! It's the way to go. I have some excellent trailer modification ideas for you that are proven good. Go with a swiveling pindle on the toung connection. Make tree deflectors that divert brush around to the outside of the tires. And my latest greatest mod just tested only this year is the moose QuarterPickerUpper !!!! U got to do this it's awsome!! I posted some moose camp photos in a J5 hub seal thread a few weeks ago. This will save your back!

Bombardiere made matching tracked trailers for the Muskeg tractors. The J5's wider cousin, the "Dual-Drive" also had a matching trailer with the same tracks and twin rows of the same tires. I sold one to a man in Fairbanks.
Your J5 has one unique feature not found on any other J5. The original carb was removed by a previous owner (not me), and replaced with the carb off a military rig, probably a Power Wagon. It has a water trap for fording, and was not standard equipment. The water trap manifold hung out the side of the engine compartment, so the owner gouged and tore a hole for it so that the side cover would go on. I added the 'Pie-Pan' and decal to give it a more finished look. Also the engine was probably replaced at some point and they put the next bigger engine in, from a rebuild shop in N.J. Shortly after restoring it I had an associate escort me up a logging road right on the edge of Mt. Rainier. It was a "Shake-Down" and Test run. The machine was able to maintain 35 continuously for some miles up a fairly steep grade without overheating. We checked against the New chevy pick-up's speedometer. Thanks for posting the pictures!
 
I did have to rebuild engine after the previous owner sunk it. It runs awesome but the rebuild was 5400$:doh:
I must have more money than brains because I won a dual carb setup on ebay for the 25" block which is very rare. The carbs were rebuilt and linkage set up (not shown in pic)I have not equipped the machine with it because it runs so good now with so much power I can't get it out of second gear anywhere I drive.

Dual headers and carbs is supposed to give the Chrysler 251 CI 20 more horse power and be more fuel efficient. Industrial combines and large trucks were equipped with them. Hesitant to screw up my set up.
 
35 mph in a J5 is pretty insane! I got mine screaming down a snowy road at 25 and the slightest bump would have sent me into the roof. I rarely get mine out of second unless I'm on a road. And I only drop it into first in really nasty spots. The low RPM torque it great on the flathead. Just off idle will chug through about anything in second gear. Have you guys ever timed one of these engines with a vacuum guage?
 
IMP did you ever put a new gas pickup in your tank? Mine had s leak and caused the motor to miss when it was climbing in or out of a hole. You mentioned yours did the same thing last year.
 
My engine miss and running Rich condition was due to retarded timing. I advanced it 7 degrees and it ran and started way better. It wasn't that bad before but much better now. But it still runs rich. The guy at Vintage power wagon told my to check my timing with a jvacuum guage. He said to set my timing at the point where I get the greatest vacuum. So I did that and I advanced it another 15 degrees!! It seems to run and start great but I havnt drove it since the last timing advance so I don't know if my plugs will tan up yet. I also replaced the old oil bath filter with a K and N. Turned out to be a nice installation and replaced the coil. I'm troubleshooting in the right direction but I need to run the machine to see if that fixed it. That why I asked if anyone has vacuum timed one of these engines before. Glad yours is running great. It's a beautiful sound when those engines start and purr when your back in 25miles of swamp and muck

And my check still bounced. With my bank being in Anchorage thought I get to the VT boarder befor they clew him in! I didn't even make it to the end of the driveway.... Darn computers.
