Android virus question

Got a popup on my Android tablet this morning. Popup stated that I had three virus's, and I needed to go to the Google store and download an anti virus program. Even provided me a link, which I did not use.

Two questions: Do I have a virus?, or is Google trying to sell me something?

(2) AFIK, I have no antivirus software on the tablet. Should I? If so, which one.

The tablet gets used only to access a few trusted sites, like Yahoo, FF, a few other forums. Internet browsing is done on my well protected W 8 laptop.

Word is that you have an app installed that is causing this issue. If you clicked either button (even the no thanks one) you might have enabled malware to be installed on the tablet. If you see something like that again they say the best thing to do is power the unit off and back on. You can read plenty more at this link to the android forum:

Thanks. I never click on popups, and do shut down the power and reboot.

I have seen some info that Avast has a good Android anti virus program.

It does make me wonder what happens to the millions of cell phones that have no anti virus.

Some with the droid phone were having the same issue as you in that link I posted. They also talked of AVG for droid. Given the choice I'd go with free AVG over Avast, I have avast paid copy on one of my laptops and it's always trying to sell me something. Don't care for that at all..
