An Interesting And Vicious Deadly Animal

mtntopper

Back On Track
Already this year we have one of the most vicious wild animals for its size hanging around our yard. I stepped out the front door to look at a wild rabbit feeding in the yard yesterday and quickly noticed the stoat (ermine) sneaking up on it. The ermine is about 25% the size of a full grown wild rabbit but can kill it by biting it with extremely sharp teeth in less than 30 seconds. The rabbit escaped and the ermine also escaped my 22 rifle. They are very quick moving and almost impossible to get your sights on them. They will kill a house cat if the opportunity arises. I do not like them and have dispatched several over the years. I wait for them to go into a hole looking for food and train my sights on the hole and when they reappear at the same opening I can get a shot. They are pretty but will kill for the sake of killing and can wipe out all of the other small animals in the neighborhood very quickly.

Here are a couple pics I have taken of the ermine near our home.

WOW! What a cool little animal.. Not that I disagree with you. A predator is a predator and has no business in your yar.. Especially when there killing your rabbits. Looks like it would take 101 Stoats to make a fur coat. lol.

We call that little guy a weasel around here. We have one living in the barn with 11 cats. No problem so far. They say if you have a weasel in the yard, you won't have a problem with other rodents such as mice and rats. This guy is pretty tame and alot of fun to watch, but if her cats start to disappear_:shitHitFan:

We've been dealing with coyotes in our area. A neighbor visited all of us in the vicinity and warned us that he was setting traps because they're killing his goats. Apparently, the bait is something that also attracts house pets! I had a cat disappear a few years back, I wonder if a coyote got him.

Coyotes are another undesirable that we must deal with often. When they form into packs, they become very aggressive and will kill many types of livestock, other wild animals and even domestic pets. We have way too many of them along with a few wolves now roaming the Big Horn mountains near our home. I do not like to change the balance of nature but the coyotes and wolves have very few natural enemies and seem to just multiply beyond natures capacity to control them without some intervention by man. Balance in nature is often not pretty but is a necessity for coexistence and continuation for the different species of animals.

we HAD a HUGE pack of coyotes here as well a few years back. House cats and dogs went missing. At least the ones that were running freely. Anyway I came home LATE one night and saw a mountain lion in the street. BIG MOUNTAIN LION. I usually see Coyotes every night but lately the have been dwindling down. It goes in cycles. One year theres alot the next not as many then back up again. Coyotes are vicouse animals! They can take a dog down on there own that is twice there size. Any size house dog will never survive a pack hunt on it.

Had a black wolf by the house a few days back, looked like he was just kicked out of the "Hood".

We get a pack that pass by the house every few weeks and look into the yard to see what looks good to eat. Had a few dogs come up missing this last few months around Fairbanks. One guy chased a wolf down in his car that was dragging his dog off, it dropped it and ran off.

Everytime the State of Alaska, has a wolf kill/control program, we get the goofballs coming out of the woodwork, the worse from the East Coast, but we have alot of them living here now...

The reason the State of Alaska has so many wolves is because of the control that the State has over them, not because the activist are "saving" them... Most of the control and preservation is from the hunters and the fees that they pay to keep the wildlife at healthy levels for them and the hunters.

If you get too many wolves, they kill off all the animals and the system crashes and then they starve and die off... If they are kept at a level that keeps them healthy and a good supply of food, they will be around for a long time.

At my cabin, I was clearing a runway off, and the next morning went back to the dozer to keep working and a pack of wolves came by and pissed all over the tracks, so I went around an did the same around the area.... They come up to the cabin and piss on the steps at night, so I go back out and do the same all around the area...

Been an ongoing pissing contest now for awhile....

Love to hear the wolves call in the early evenings too, but the goofballs that claim to want to save them really don't have a clue to what they are or are not doing.... but too many are not a good thing (that is the goofballs)

No way will you be able to keep up with them...:yum: :thumb: :yum:

They make this tool called a shotgun:D

I do not own a shotgun but I have one 22 loaded with bird shot and that works if I am close enough.... Must be time to buy another gun.... Who is going to tell my wife that I need another gun. Two new ones have appeared already this month in my collection. She bought me a 280 caliber Remington 50th commemorative of the 280 cartridge in a model 700LSS for Christmas. I bought myself a cheapy Remington 7MM mag for the heck of it. The 280 Remington is a beauty and the 7MM is an everyday shooter with a synthetic stock and 3X9X40 scope.
