An American Story

Bobcat

Je Suis Charlie Hebdo
Here's a little story about the wife of one of my co-workers as told by their local newspaper. In the past you knew her as one of the 'boat people'. Now know her as Helen, a real American.

Bob, I don't even know where to begin in commenting on that story .
All I can think to say is that this is a person I'd like to meet .
I can honestly say that if I were in Her shoes ,I don't think I'd have had the grit She ,or Her family showed .

I agree with everything you said. Just a reminder of how damn lucky most of us are to have been born here and what others had to go through to get here. And this family didn't come here for economic gain as so many do. Risking their lives, and the lives of their children, they came for freedom; something most of us take for granted. Helen Nguyen may not 'appear' or 'sound' American to some, but to me she is more American than I am. I'm proud to know her husband and hope to meet her in the near future.

SnoOps just worked with her husband last month in the mountains of Idaho. Most of his recent snowcat pictures and videos were taken by Doan Nguyen. His pleasant demeanor and childish sense of humor belies the hardships his family and his wifes family endured to be here.

I have a great deal of admiration for this woman, and for all the Boat People. The folks I knew in 'Nam (except for the ones
trying so hard to kill me!) were all good people*; it was their government that was the problem. The ones that ended up
shrimping in Mississippi did very well. They have a sense of family that we seem to have lost in the last half-century.

*Okay, this may sound snide, degrading, and racist, but it isn't. Some of them tried to kill me without much success and
I tried to return the favor. Aside from that, they are a good and honorable people. This does sound like an indefensible
dichotomy, but it really isn't. If you doubt this, talk to anyone who was there; they should be able to explain it.
