Am I an idiot?

Mak, shut up.

this is how my day went. I picked up a van about 1030 hrs. Removed a wheelchair lock, photoing the wire pattern, then removing a plywood floor some idiot had soaked with hydraulic fluid. Clean van to remove all excess oil. Cut, drill and replace floor (3/8 inch A/C ply) re-wire and re-install lock for wheel chair. Re-installing lock required me to drop the fuel tank about 3 inches because of bolt position. Clean and deliver van. Parts, 30.00, pickup and deliver van, 30.00. Labor 3 hrs at 30.00/hr. Now I am hurting from a combo of sun poisoning and overheating. Fortunately, beer helps.

You work cheap! Too damn hot for that down your way or even up here.
Garages around here are charging 65-100, but I feel lime I'm screwing folks if I get past 30.00. Am I just too good hearted? Or maybe it comes from actually giving a damn(a charge I publicly deny)?

Charge what you feel is appropriate for your time, helping someone out with the cost is admirable and some people are really hurting and need some help, but remember( no good deed goes unpunished):ermm:some times helping costs more than we care to admit, some days are better than others and water under the bridge kinda thing, not sure that makes any sense:unsure:

hopefully they appreciate your efforts.

On general labor I only charge 12-15. On mech or elec 30.00 painting(with my wife)25.00. I mostly work for older people who have limited incomes. I feel it is wrong to charge them out the ying yang. In a way, I guess it is a moral principal. But, damn, I'm getting old myself and the bones and muscles ache a lot more than they used to. Water/bridge. Yep, makes sense. Just wondering if I am really hurting myself to help others. Cerveza and a keyboard affect me that way.

Well don't feel bad. The little neighbor boy came over last night with a broken chain on his bike. He asked me if I could fix it. The back tire was worn down to the treads also. His mother came over and felt kind of bad that he brought the bike to me and I said no problem. She asked how much to fix and I said probably around $30.00 for new chain, tire and tube. She gave me $40.00 to fix. I got a new chain for 9.99 and a tire for 10.95. Had about twenty minutes labor in it and had it up and running. The kid was pretty excited about it, thanked me and rode off in the sun. Well not really there was no sun today. I gave the mom twenty of the forty back so I got nothing for labor.

It is fine the boy helped me mowing my lawn when my mower was broke. Yeah I paid him to mow but the whole thing just kind of made me feel good.

Alls I can say is Good on Ya Lobo . Do what you can and what feels right to you . There aint no set price on helping others while trying to put a few bucks in your own pocket IMHO . :thumb:

No, you're an idiot. But an idiot who can sleep at night. Good for you, LL.

IF you choose to help out someone who has limited resources by reducing your labor rate, that is an admirable quality. I do it frequently, and sometimes I work pro bono if the situation warrants it. If you are in business and feel that charging the going rate is somehow cheating the customer, you will be eternally poor and probably be passed over as a viable mechanic b
