one thing you might consider if you wish is to install a second alternator
and use it to produce 140 volt power DC if you put full 12 volt power to your
field conection which can be on a switch with a say 60 amp alternator you can produce 120-140 volt dc power which is great for running electric heating options it will also run most brush driven tools skill saws and drills

A 60 amp will produce 7000-9000 watts which will do a lot of heating. will run any element driven apliance. toasters, electric frying pan.

You can pull the diodes and produce AC but the cycles will very high ( depends on the number of poles in the alternator)

Do not exceed the amp rating of the alternator or you will toast the diodes.

you can use larger alternators also . but requires more hp to run

60 amp at full load can pull up to 10 hp from engine :thumb:

You can use a double pole double throw switch on a one alternator system to connect disconnect your field input from regulated normally about 2.5 volt to full power and at the same-time control your output with the same switch but if you run to long with it being used to power a saw or drill or something you are not charging your battery when doing this. :thumb:

Are you talking about waveform timing or the regulation of amplitude? Thanks

Waveform timing......... The last one I built ran around 400 cycles if you pulled the diodes car alternators are really 3 phase generators tied into 3 diodes of course which tame it down to DC. lighting does very well on DC
better than AC :thumb:

How about gear it down with a different size pulley, and then control engine RPM to output near 60 cycles. Maybe 6 to 1 reduction? Ever tried it?

well you could rewind it with the correct number of poles but I have not. To get 120-140 Volts with 12vdc to the field you need to spin close to 5000 rpms so you are really going the wrong way to bring the cycles down:smileywac

Right. How does a drill or other tool respond to 400 cycles? I had an old jeep pickup once that had a 120volt generator output that was a box connected to the stock alternator. Never used it to know how it worked.

Well it would be fast !!!!!!!! we run drills skill-saws off of the DC they will run just fine if they have brushes, light bulbs will do fine, toasters, electric frying pans coffee pots (non electronic) old style anything with a brush or element:thumb:
