Afghanistan

Guys, the reason we destroyed the Taliban and the entire Afghan government and now are replacing it has something to do with . . . terrorism! Remember 9-11? That event is the genesis for Afghanistan.

Ummm, I don't think the Taliban is destroyed and also think the 9/11 mastermind is still at large and likely in Afghanistan. Vin, I think the question should not necessarily be why are we in Afghanistan but why we didn't finish the job there in the first place. And when I say we, I mean the global community - not just the US.

The Taliban run government was destroyed.

The Taliban is actually made up of ideas and as such, it is virutally impossible to destroy ideas.

I believe that the international coalition in Afghanistan is working to effectively root out all Taliban fighters, loyalists, etc. The new Afghani government does not embrace the Taliban ideals and is also working to root out the Taliban holdouts. But there will likely always be some small % of folks who believe that the Taliban should rule Afghaninstan, and probably should rule the whole world.

We are clearly there, as an international community, because of the Taliban's official support of Osama Bin Laden and the faciltation of the 9-11 attacks. The world united behind the cause and took action. The world also realized that it needed to rebuild the nation after it destroyed it. That is why we are there, that is why we are still there, and that is why we will remain there for quite a few years. It takes time to finish the job properly. I had soldiers in Afghanistan working for me, they reported that the nation is actually in 'fair' condition and improving. Every bit of word that I have gotten from soldiers in Afghanistan and in Iraq is that the nations are in better shape than we are led to believe.

I personally feel that the Afghan fight is the "good fight". It is just and is the correct response to the 9/11 attacks. Afghanistan has proven to be a perfect stronghold for guerilla warfare and we will likely have a long battle. Why the huge deployment that went to Iraq didn't go to Afghanistan first is beyond me. Seems like decapitating the Taliban would have done more symbolically to stop terrorism than decapitating the Iraq government aka S.H..

It's also great training grounds for our armed forces. The last time I checked the MAJORITY of people deployed to Afghanistan weren't complaining about it. All they ever seem to ask for is our support and I think that is not too much for us to give them. I know Bob is legendary in his support and I thank him for all he does.
