A few photos from our trip to France

The family went to France for spring break. While we stopped off in Paris for a couple days, we spent most of the time in the south of France with our time split between the Provance region and the Cote d'Azure areas. We did take the high-speed rail "TGV" train from Paris to Avignon, which was a pretty nice trip. About 3 hours by high speed train from Paris (Northern France) to Avignon (South not too far from the Mediterranean Sea) with none of the hassles of flying. From Avignon we took a private bus to Cannes, and ultimately Nice.

For the most part we spent time looking at piles or rocks. Being history buffs we tried to visit the significant Roman ruins, many of which are in the south of France. Based ourselves in the town of Avignon for our stay in the Provance region. During a period when the Pope moved out of Rome, Avignon became the city that maintained the Papal seat so we got to view the religious sites in Avignon, but also saw the Roman ruins in the countryside and towns within driving distance of Avignon. There are several significant Roman sites within an hour or two drive so we managed to get to see most of them.

Tried the HORSEMEAT at a little cafe. Tasted like dry/very lean hamburger. They serve it with a lightly fried egg on top, I presume to add some moisture to the meat?

Overall our best meals were at lunchtime in the little cafes that dot the side streets and town squares. Paris was beautiful, the architecture was stunning. The Louvre was amazing, only had a half day to walk around and that is clearly not enough time, actually 2 days is not enough time to visit the Louvre. I didn't realize the Eiffel tower was so big, its over 1000 feet tall. The little towns were highlights of their own, each was different, each was beautiful.

My youngest son is going the end of May. I should make him stay home and me go, but his high school class would probably notice.

Very Nice Bob, It sound like you had fun. While it's nice to get away, it's aslo nice to be back home !
VERY NICE TO BE HOME AGAIN!!!

My youngest son is going the end of May. I should make him stay home and me go, but his high school class would probably notice.
We had a bunch of high school students with us. Mostly honors students studying Latin. The kids flew in the back of the plane but the lovely Mrs Bob and I got free upgrades to the good seats because I pulled a few strings. The kids were actually great, several of them hung around with us a few days and I think they got some additional learning by doing so. We were on a tour, but we had about 1/2 of each day free to roam on our own.

Here is a video from one of the morning group events (it gets good at about 2:20).

Very nice Bob.
Did you go to Lachaise Cemetery and visit Sacre Coeur? (those steps could kill a person)
Agreed, the Louvre cannot be seen in just 2 days if you want to see it all.
Were you surprised over the size of the Mona Lisa?

Good pics Bob. Nice sure is beautiful. Love the pic w/ the boats and the buildings around the area. Both that pic and the Eiffel Tower look to be post card quality. :thumb:

Actually walked the steps but only visited the Jewish cemetery.

I was not surprised at the size of Mona Lisa, but only because I knew what to expect.

That was a funny video :yum::yum:
It cracks me up every time I watch it but it was funnier in person.

Most of us were huffing and puffing by the time we reached the top of Sacre Coeur.

As for the size of Mona Lisa, I guess I expected it to be a large painting and not what appeared to be an 8x10 :yum:

That brought back some memories, just as it obviously did for PG. I used to know Paris quite well in a touristy kind of way as I used to go there quite often but I never took the time to travel in the rest of the country. That's something that I now regret but may rectify.

Glad you had a great time. Paris is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. It's also a great place for people watching.

I never had any real desire to go to Paris, but was glad we got a couple of days there. Obviously way to short to actually learn about the city other than the major tourist stops.

I did enjoy the countryside and I could probably move to NICE and never regret it. Paris was pretty crowded with all the buildings being 6 stories tall and tight. Nice place to visit, wouldn't want to live there. Wouldn't mind going back for a few more days to see things that were skimmed over.

Walking around the towns in the southern Provance region was a joy. Finding shops where nobody spoke English, and since the closest to French I speak is German, it was a bit of a communication challenge, but those were some of the better exchanges. At least comical exchanges! Still I enjoyed the towns with the little squares and the side street cafes and winding roads. Nimes, Arles, Orange were the ones I had the most time in and I'd gladly go back to all three. We based in Avignon and just about the time we got comfortable knowing our way around we had to leave for Nice. Avignon is a wonderful mid-size town. There are 2 cities, one inside the ancient walls and then one that surrounds the walls. My explorations of the town were limited to the area inside the walls but there is plenty to see and experience inside those walls.

Nice was a short visit and we barely got the flavor of the city. From little Indian spice shops on narrow streets to the Hermes, the mothership of my daughter's shopping Mecca, this city beautifully spans ancient to modern, discount to extravagant and blends it all so well. I'd go back there in a heartbeat, just to walk the streets and eat at the cafes.

Sounds like it was a fun trip for all. You must have eaten a lot of different stuff over there. Did any of it just not agree with you? I loved most things in a foreign country but there were some items I would never eat again. And of course there were some that you did not really want to know what they were made with.:w00t2:

I had no problems with any of the food but really its pretty much the same stuff you can get here, the big difference is it is served with a carafe of wine!

Loved the video, great fun!

Don't forget, we are coming to see you & Timba in a few months :hammer:

My sister's wedding is on July 6, we plan to be in London for about 8 or 9 days. Also going to skip over the channel and hit the north coast of France and work our way up to Amsterdam. Not sure when we will head toward Wales, it may be before we get to London? Or maybe after we leave London but before we hop over to the continent?

There is a slight problem with July, I shall be at the War and Peace show in Kent for most of it as we go down early. Do you fancy staying in the Norsebox and doing a few trips round the area in an old Willys Jeep? Talking about Little Willy (the Jeep), is there any chance you could send me a paint sample of Strata Blue 15045 (Federal Standard 595B) or help me with the email address of the American Air Force, please? Someone has sent me a paint sample which is supposed to be this Strata Blue, but it looks far too dark to me and I would like to get the Jeep into the correct colour this year.
