Have I got tis right? You get that really neat looking Tucker and get to drive around in some of the most beautiful winter scenery AND get paid for it?

Way to go!! Please keep posting pix, they are beautiful.

:) I do, well some times when the SAR cats are down I take it out with out getting paid... but thats another story.

we still do tower maintenance in the winter, but most of the time it is only if something breaks, dishes ice up, etc.

I also take other people to their towers, that the trips i like :) get paid to take other people and I dont have to get out and work once we get there. lol

One of the trips this week was for a radio station, his deicer wasnt working in auto mode, nasty weather, and their snow mobiles were in the shop getting worked on , so it was basically turning on a switch then waiting to make sure it was working, then head back.

last night we had 7 people who got trucks stuck up in the high country, and tonight there is 2, I am on stand by encase the SAR cat has any trouble, (our other Sar cat is taken apart for new tires)

I always forget to take pictures when out on a SAR mission, I guess too many other things going on. :-/

went up to sherrette creek to tape up some exhaust systems on equipment this weekend had some beautiful weather with at about 0 degrees no overflow on the pilgram river the thing looked like a runway when i crossed had a 5 mile streatch with no snow than got into about 2 feet the other side of iron creek total milage on the trip about 40 miles

I did 8 miles in my snow trac today hunted and 8 back and really got kind of bored on the way home. I don't know how you do it. Must be that cruse knob and soft seats they have.

gruse control is nice just run it up to 4 k and kick my feet up on the other seat le the dog rest his head and pet him with one hand and steer with the other.

Well the last few weeks have been busy to say the least...
here is a cool thing the SO was demoing, not sure how practical it would be for us... with only 5mph on the water It wouldnt fare to well in the river. I stopped by to check it out right before hopping on a plane to Des mouines

We had 5 rescues over the holiday weekend.
I took the Tucker out on 2 and was on stand by for 1, and the last one I didnt really want to burn any more work favors so I took a sled, and with the sled being quicker I was able to grab a few pics, not a bad night but a long story.... I am still surprised how some people are...

well long story short..... we were up for stranded people on wed night.. and we had a report of other hunters stranded by the storm we had. guys went and talked to them.. they had 2 vehicles at there base camp, an old jeep pickup, and a suburban.
they were all set up, wall tent, heat, food, etc, and they said they were fine and didnt need any help...
so we didnt go in after them...

well come friday we get a report that they now had a distress sign out... so we went in to get them...

we get there on the sleds and they still had camp set up, and HELP stoped out in the snow...
well they shot the deer (nice buck if I do say so) that morning and had got it back to camp... and now they were ready to leave.

it was -13C when we got there, and once out of the trees it was colder and wind chill. ( I was missing the heater on the tucker) LOL

they said there cars were all chained up but they didnt think they could make it out.... we found they had chains on just the front tires )

so after a few hours of them breaking down camp we sent the suburban out behind the cat... and.... the jeep wouldnt start... steering colum froze up, he was able to get the key to the run position, and then jumped the start relay to get her started.....

so we were off, to catch the cat.

after a few hours of pulling them threw drifts we get to a corner where the snow had drifted DEEP. the small cat couldn't even budge the burban.. and the winch wasnt working worth crap.... sooo we get them all loaded into the cat, (deer, dog and all) and the sleds get grouped up around the corner.. we turn around... and everything is dark where the cat was.... "thats not good"
so we head back... well we found out why the winch wasnt working... the neg cable had come off earlier in the trip. so the battery wasnt getting charges... so it gets jumped from one of the stranged cars.. (luckaly it was close enough due to loading the deer)

and we are off.

yada yada.

get the sleds loaded and wait for the cat........ (radio) we are about 2 miles out... and the cat died.. great what a night... turns out the rear heater hose had rubbed on the drive line and wore a hole through it... ok no big problem, the get it loaded and we fixed it next day. along with a new battery shut off switch and cable..

the next day they sent a grader in to get the cars out...

and yes that was the short story :)

we install new tires on the big cat tomorrow night so we will be back up to 2 Sar cats again, and the tucker will be on standby to help if they have issues.

Pretty cool stories and pic's there Matt! Keep them coming!

You guys go well beyond what we were ever allowed to do on a SAR mission. Our job was specifically to get the people out, followed by any living animals (if we could), but never were we allowed to haul out personal property or vehicles. We also never attempted to tow a vehicle with a cat. Thems were the rules.....:ermm:

Again, NICE WORK!

yeah we are trying to get away from alot of it... its kind of a catch 22... if we can help we will. but we are trying to get away from most of it... we arent a towing company... :-/ some people look at it as if we go and get the people and they go back the next day to recover their property then most likely we will be called back out when they get hurt trying to get it out. :-/

but there is always the issue with if we break something while "helping" it really isnt worth it...

but then again I am just a ground pounder so I just do what I am told, lol

if it's a not too much work we will do the same i have pulled sleds home with my st and even got the assistance of the national guard one time when i had an accedent with mine on a s&r everybody tries to pull together when we have to go out and look for some one about all i get out of it is some free gas for the mission and the comfort of knowing if i ever am in a situation that some one will com looking for me it's happened once in my snow machining days got in to a bad storm and fell through over flow took a ride back to town on a black hawk and hopefully never again.

Small world - Matt, you were in Utah or SW Colorado for part of the "This weeks trips?"

My coworker was on a trip - Denver->Steamboat->Utah->Telluride->CB->Denver during that time. He (and anyone in the office who will listen) knows I'm moderately obsessed with snowcats, and he'd taken a picture of a cat on a trailer at a gas station. He emailed it to me, download, open, heyyyyyy....I recognize that cat!

Speaking of most excellent Tuckers, is the owner of the newer silver rubber-track Tucker with a BIG passenger cab that I see every weekend on Vail Pass on this board? That thing is lovely, much like Matt's.

that is a good looking cat. :) but not mine :-/
I was down close to the Utah boarder though.

we have a tool box mounted on the back. If I saw the truck I could most likely tell you who it was :) it is on a Big dog trailer that tucker also sells, I think they switched trailer company's in 08, so just a guess this would be 06 - 08 cat the winsheild wipers were changed in 09

yeah I know I am a little obsessed with tuckers :)

WOW! Great stories & pictures everyone :wow:

I am so envious of the snow you have!!! The storms keep going just north of us and I think I finally have ours running well enough to use it... and the storms just won't settle in here...

I think we're all pretty obsessed about snowcats!

It could have been, but most likely it was the At&T cat, (old edge wireless)
most of our stuff up in ashton and Island park we are able to drive too. (sawtelle is blown out by the FAA, we just have to get clearance before heading up)
I will be heading up to relay ridge, out by newdale this next week. so I will be sure to take more pics

nice pics sometimes i miss those trees covered in snow but i also love the fact that up here i don't have to deture around them and i can see forever just like on the mountain tops.
