601 Starter trouble.

I tried to start my Thiokol 601 last week and when I pressed the button all I got was a click. I assumened the batterie was low so I brought it home and put it on the charger. To my supprise it wasn't very low but I topped it off anyway. I brought it out to camp yesterdat and installed it and got the same result. I cleaned the connections, still the same. I tried another batterie from another vehicke, same thing. I have power as the beacon iand heater are working. It just wont turn over. I have the original ford 6. any ideas?:w00t2:

Solenoid is not pulling in all the way. It should be a separate little cannister looking device on the positive cable between battery and starter. It uses low voltage from the ignition switch to close the heavy contactor to send power to the starter motor. You can jump the incoming power to the solenoid to the starter to see if that is the problem.

Bad ground wire connections will do that as well. enough current for the small stuff not enought to spin the starter.

Step two in my world is to bridge the large two wires on the solenoid and see if it will spin over. *remember to be in neutral*

also determine if the click is the solenoid or the starter motor.
If the motor is stuck from sitting It may just need to be rocked a bit to get it off of its tight spot.

2 good suggestions i would get a test light see if you have curent flowing through the solenoid if so try to grab the fly wheel and bar the engine over rings can rust to the cylender walls preventing the starter to roll it over also the starter brushes can carrode you may want to tap on the starter with a hammer or bar up by the front part of the housing to free up stuck brushes lastly i have seen ford starters jam in the flywheel and lock up motors so if the moter feels locked up try removing the starter motor first before using bad language

I got the old beast started. I kept going back to the battery. After the click when I hit the starter, I then noticed that the other items like the heater fan slowed. When I twisted the ground connection it all picked back up again. I cleaned the battery post and connector last week but this time I really scraped them both. After that it fired right up. I'm very happy, Thanks for all the help.

I am kind of funny that way.

I have put more miles on a Snow trac I bought for parts than I put on all of the other four machines combined. I put on 3 miles this past week. seems like the better the machine condition the less likely I will take off cross country on a drive.

I am very hesitant to turn aggressivly but it seems to like the wheat field and tall grass.]

Of course the wife is less than impressed about the lawn, But....

i have been known to drive mine all summer long and don't have any problems except for getting all the mud off it prior to winter. one has to stay away from large rocks and don't drive down the ruts in trails. my buddy up here also a member has a 601 he takes out every fall during hunting season his sees more summer driving than it does winter driving.

I started this policy when I was running my Weasels. I liked the weasel for its smaller size running on the over grown logging trails. The problem with weasels is always the tracks. They were old and the cable in the belts broke easy and were very difficult to repair. I spent quite a few hours replacing broken grousers on my 601 too. Also the drive is much nicer on nice fluffy snow. Driving the weasels on a hard surface was like driving a chainsaw. :w00t2:

i still want to build a weasel with nodwell tracks and roadwheels under it i have seen several and if you get one with a good hull they do make the ultimate all terrain vehicle but with the old tracks and suspension i would never drive one anyfarther than i would want to walk. Be advised that when the components were newer the weasel had an awsom suspension.aand were reliable
