601 heaters

The heaters in my 1963 601 have never worked very well. I cleaned out the mouse nests and got the blower fans working, but I only get a little heat in front, and nothing from the back. Would flushing the coolant system fix this, any recommendations?

Maybe flushing will fix, but more likely flushing will identify issue. I'd suggest identifying the direction the fluid flows. remove the heater circuit from the engine. hook up a water hose and see how it flows. Heater systems were not made for much back pressure so it takes little obstruction to cause them not to work. old rubber lines shed interiors which clog the cores, and /or clog the lines. kinked tubing is not that uncommon. If you don't get much flow out the return start there. sometimes reversing the flow will knock out chunks that were clogging. Valves rust in position and the selector wires break free leading you to think they are working. watch while someone moves the levers. Lastly, does the engine maintain temperature most of the time? If not, someone may have pulled the thermostat which with the lower pressure allows the water to bypass the heater.

my $0.02.not to be construed as official information. Your mileage may vary,

do you get a prounounced temp gauge increase, slight dip when the tstat opens then steady 180 temp reading?

with out a tstat installed sometimes the flow through the heater circuit is lazy. make sure you have a working tstat.
