Does the $500 per hour include health insurance? (It looks like hospitalization and emergency room plus ambulance would be a good idea).
Wow! And I thought it was dangerous working with mature boars when we raised hogs!
Didn't know the Bear Personally, although I have been closer to a Grizzly. I work with the surveyors. It's -20 today, -41 with the wind chill, and I will be working at the spot where these pictures were taken in a couple of hours. No "Sun rise" today.
In answer to "What Happened to the Guy?", Nothing, he got chewed out by the safety guy, and his boss laughed.
An now for the "POP QUIZ": How far inland do you think that these pictures were taken? one mile? five miles? Polar Bears have been spotted as much as 30 miles out to sea. Good swimmers!
See the Drift wood? That IS the ocean! The frozen Arctic Ocean, in this part of the World called the Beaufort Sea. Those two vehicles are within 20 feet of the shore line.
"Roger that", but I'm thinking 458 or 459 or 50 Cal. Every alaskan I've met tells stories about taking down a Bear, and after they killed it they found evidence of as many as 20 previous shots that the Bear had survived. One of my co-workers took down a bear that had 4 bullits mushroomed on the skull that were by some previous hunters, and several more in the rib area. >
Alaskans say:"Bring a 459 and a pistol, if the rifle doesn't work, you shoot your buddy in the leg with the pistol"
No Oil workers that I know of, but not to long ago a couple of Military tech's working on "White Alice"(Old nickname for the DEW Line Early Warning Sites), did get attacked and survived. This just happened around 2005 or so: One of the Tech's saw the polar bear at one of the windows and started making faces at it. This pissed off the Bear who smashed thru the window and started to maul the Tech. His partner managed to beat off the bear with a hammer, but the guy was pretty chewed up. Moral of the story: Don't tease Polar Bears! I'll see if I can locate and post the article.
I believe that I had mentioned that I had a Bear encounter of my own at an earlier time. I physically ran into a fairly full grown male grizzly, which spooked us both and we ran in opposite directions. His claw marks were far more impressive than my sneaker tracks. It left about 5 of my coworkers rolling on the ground laughing!
you used to be able to get a Marlin 1895 customized in either 450 or 500 Alaskan. the cool thing about the 500 - at one point they were cutting the tips off .50BMG bullets and mounting them upside down in the cases. As I recall, the 450 was a modified 45/70 or 45/90 cartridge using a barnes X bronze bullet.
So right you are. They still modify Marlins 1895 for either the 50 Alaskan or the 475 wild west cartridge. With the 475 you can still shoot a standard 45/70.
