4t10/601 performance in the snow

I do not have much of an idea how these machines perform in different snow conditions and depths. Being soon to be a 1st timer in this type of machine I thought I would ask for some advice as far as what type of conditions to avoid, snow depths, grade etc. Quite a few years ago I drove a thiokol imp for the Forest Service, that machine would go most any where we wanted. I plan on staying on roads, no cross country. I suspect the machine I have will not meet the capabilities of an imp. I don,t want to be out in conditions I should not be in and get stuck in the boonies.
Other than the no brainer stuff a person should pack along in the winter, any suggestions on other equip, like a come-a-long etc.
Any advice from you guys that have been out in this type of cat would be appreciated.
