1980 Tucker 1743-A in ND

its not a bad looking machine a few sprockets and road wheel bearings you would b tuckering. I still think with that jimmy engine it has to be loud.

Aaron if you want to learn more about what you bid on, here's some ideas

There was a forum member a few years ago who bought a Tucker 2742 with a 4-53T engine. He posted some youtube videos that feature that engine running. It has a rather distinctive sound to it. There was a video of him driving it, but I haven't seen it in a while. Here's one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QEjClWSJQfw

If you go to Safety One's website they have very comprehensive listing of snowcat specification sheets from a bunch of manufacturers. They have one for the Tucker 1700 series machines.

I looked at the photos on the Ironplanet website this morning. It honestly looked pretty nice and "unmolested". Lots of options such as the Allison automatic, Warn winch, rear heater, rear wiper, rear defroster, roof lights, spot light, etc. Yes, it needs someone to give it some TLC, but I didn't see any rust and the cab seemed in very nice shape. Even the front seats had no rips in the upholstery (the right rear seat bottom looked like it was missing).

A few observations: The Detroit 4-53 was available from Tucker in both turbocharged and non turbocharged versions. Comparing the photos of VXclimber180's machine with the one on Ironplanet, it appears it is the non-turbocharged variant

That machine is Heavy (capital H). GVW is 10,100 lbs. I have a 1644 and it's GVW is 8100. Track area is the same, so track loading is 25% more.

Tuckers aren't known for their speed, and I'd guess a 1743 is even slow-er.

If you haven't done it, I'd suggest calling Tucker with the serial number and asking for the order sheet. They'll very kindly look it up and fax/email it to you. It will have a whole bunch of information as far as options, component suppliers, part numbers, etc. Very worthwhile information for an owner or a prospective buyer.

Some of the grousers had an unusual square piece of steel attached. I'm guessing that was for some type of carbide to be placed for additional traction on ice. (If anyone knows please let me know.)

Good Luck in the auction!!!

It should be noted that the turbo charged 4 53T will be some what quieter than the non turbo charged engine. Turbo's tend to break up the noise, especially with a muffler.

This is true for all engines that are turbocharged. Not to mention they make more Horse Power, and do not loose power at high elevations, unlike their non turbo charged counterparts..

Just something to keep in mind when bidding..

Regards, Kirk

Pretty sure that one is a 453T and appears to be the same configuration as the one in my 1981 542 with the turbo on the passenger side with the blower. These 'fan to flywheel' motors were built in Brazil according to the serial number info I found online.

If you really want to hear it, here is an 18 minute run up Mt Hood and back. The turn at Silcox hut around 10 minutes and the last minute is a good representation of the 'scream'.

If you look at the auction under transmission is says the the cat drives forward until it hangs up on the LR track . dose anyone know what this could mean .? Please help .hope I didn't bid on a lemon . oh well. Thanks for the info on it .I have a 1342 and need more room for my second child .wife is pregnant again lol

The left rear track is shown in photos 89-95 and looking at 91 you can see the UHMW track guide severed exposing the end of the square tube. I'm sure the grouser is getting hung up on the square tube. I had to replace mine on all four corners as well as the UHMW ice breaker wheels. The guide is 1" thick 3"x~72" and I found a place online to cut them for about $75

I believe that you can use a rose bud carefully to set the bends in the UHMW

A machine identical to this one sold at Ritchie's in Edmonton Alberta about 4 years ago for 13500 and went to North Dakota. It was rougher and full of mud. The one like this that I posted a few years back from Scotch Creek BC was much rougher and i think it sold for 15000 but the guy excluded a 5.9 cummins to replace the Detroit.

$7750 is a great price for that model considering the buyers fee dropped from 10% to 3.85% at $7750. Those models sold between $12-18K in AK a couple years ago but they were all ready to run.

i know wish i could of got it . what I really want is a 1644 . i think that would be my tucker dream for the rocky mountains that I have to tackle on a regular basis .

Aaron, I agree with you on your analysis. But if you need to be able to carry more than four people inside, you're limited to a 43. Sometimes you'll see a 44 advertised as a "4-5 man cab" but that's bullsnort. You will not get three adults (normal size) in the back (or front) of a 44. 1644's can be hard to find, especially in nice condition. If you add the caveat "at a reasonable price" it gets even tougher.

In my opinion the 1743 at auction went really cheap. I'm not sure why as it looked darn nice. Perhaps the 1700 series heavy duty machines are a niche market and most buyers shy away from the extra weight? Perhaps some didn't want the Diesel engine? But, maybe someone just got lucky? As I mentioned in a thread a few months ago I went to an auction in August that featured seven Thiokol/DMC/LMC machines. They went for considerably more than I was willing to pay (and some of them are currently listed on ksl.com for what I would call "stupid money").
