1979 Bombi sterring bands

I have a Bombi and it needs steering bands . Do I have to pull the axles ,tracks or can they be done just by removing the top cover? Is there longer lasting bands now and what is the best oil to run in the differential for heat disperstion? WE use it to groom snowmobile trails in upstate NY and they are pretty twisty and we get a lot of heat build up. This unit did not come with a oil pump and cooler for the diff. The drag we are pulling is 6ft. wide and 12 ft. long. Also will it be a lot harder to turn with a set of snow tracks compared to the summer style tracks that are now on the machine? We had a set of snow tracks donated by a local utility when they got rid of their machine.Any info and or advise would be help full.

instead of useing the steering bands hook up some steering cylinders between the drag and bombie like snow plow angle cylinders to make your steering manuvers this will steer you more effeciantly because you wont be draging the inside track

You can remove the bands through the top cover. It is a tight fit and can be a little tricky. Several discussions of fluid can be found by searching back through this forum but basically Caterpillar and John Deere both make excellent fluids for this application.

It can be a little more difficult with the winter tracks to turn, depending on your snow depth and other surface conditions. If you don't need the flotation or extra traction for deep snow, then I would say stick with what you have got. If you are floundering around in deep snow then the winter tracks are much better. The wider tracks do help pack a wider trail and I find if the drag is wider than the width of the snowcat it does not groom as well, so that may be a consideration.

Ram steer, like DDS described above, is the best way to go when grooming with a Bombi. There are commercial ones available or you could make your own. The performance and work load of driving with be 100% better. If you decide not to use the winter tracks maybe someone would trade for a Ram Steer set up? Those tracks are worth a pretty penny if they are in good shape.

I may be looking for a set of winter tracks for a Bombi I have my eye on - what sort of price would I be looking at for these or other Bombi winter tracks?

thanks Boggie - gets pretty pricey doesn't it? - I need to make a decision pretty soon - I have my eye on 3 snowcats that would serve my purpose, but they won't serve any purpose if I don't make a decision soon - lol
