1973 Muskeg FD fluid

good afternoon, I am wondering how to check the differential fluid and FD fluid levels on my 73 Muskeg. I see that the final drives have a pug on the top and one on the bottom but I have not seen how much fluid it takes. Does the dip stick in the front bumper/tube also indicate final drive level?

Lastly, do both the steering pump with small tank by the radiator and the differential (as measured with the bumper dipstick) use the same type fluid? Is it hydraulic tractor fluid?

thanks

Fluid stays in the final drives after the main housing is drained. I drain the finals ,top off if they have a top plug , some don't , excess just runs back to the main housing, finish filling by the dipstick. There may also be a drain at the bottom of the pinion box , not much fluid but good to drain as the pinion bearings are there. Use TDH fluid for the diff , steering pump may be ATF or TDH Nice Muskeg !

Thanks for the info. After taking the steering filter off the fluid was definitely red so I will use ATF there. do you have a recommendation for the type of ATF and TDH?

Prices have gone crazy for this stuff , whatever is the best deal in my opinion. If it was going in a tractor transmission I would stay away from the recycled stuff , but for this , your just dumping 6 gallons into a steel tub. Post some more pics of your Muskeg when you have the chance.

My JW67 would barley steer when I got it several years ago. Fortunately the diff oil was not water contaminated but clearly was ATF. After reading these forums I changed the fluid to Caterpillar TO4 oil SAE 50 from Oreillys auto parts. They also had it in 30 weight. My machine started to steer correctly immediately. The manual calls for GL5 gear oil. I tried that with terrible steering response. TO4 corrected the problem.
