1644 vs 1544 in deep powder

Can anyone tell me how much difference there would actually be between a 1644 and 1544, equally loaded, in deep powder? Is the 1644 going to be able to handle significantly more snow?

Is it safe to assume 20% more track, 20% more snowcapabilities? Generally speaking.

Yes this is correct. It is also correct that a Tucker is one of the slowest snow cats out there. On a good trail they are like watching paint dry, according to another here on the boards who is looking for a snow cat. After fallowing them, I agree.

But on an unopened trail with a blade or drag they are hard to beat. Great machine to do real work with...

8 mph is my happy speed on my 442 steel track. 14 mph it is working the tracks way to hard.

Four track drive and the ability to steer with out breaking traction is hard to beat.

Hopefully you are not in a rush!

snow trac's and oc based differential's don't really brake like a cat. they vary speed between outer and inner tracks, and a Thiokol will actually have better traction when one steering lateral is pulled as than the differential is locked at that point. the cool factor with the snow tracs steering is the varriator has both tracks locked all the time so even running straight one has full torque to both tracks and steering is infinitely variable like hydrostatic machines. I have both a brake steer machine and varriator I have operated 4 track bv 206's and hydro machines. they are all different I can't say one is better than the other I only wished the tucker would be capable of a higher ground speed to optimize it's unique suspension.

Speaking from my experience of owning a 1544 and my current 443-A I cant say I notice much difference in capability. The 1644 would certainly have better flotation but I ran my 1544 at 10,000 ft in 3-4 ft of fresh piowder witn no problem. It had to work harder and needed lower gears to go but it went. Yes they are slower..11mph downhill on a packed trail was top speed for me. This was with a 4 cylinder Perkins diesel w/o a turbo..91hp. Either one will take you places you shouldn't go if you are not careful..:)
