Can a bombardier SW48 be registered for street use?

I don't want to drive my sw48 around on the road much but it would be nice if it were street legal. Then, I could drive it from my home to local friends homes to plow their driveways.

Can an SW48 be street legal in NY state and if so, what would I have to do to make it happen?

A friend tells me all I probably need to do is put one of those orange triangle signs (that farm tractors use) on the back. I'm not sure though.

I think the main problem would be tracks verus wheels . I do not know of any state that would allow it .

I doubt if any snowcat would meet the legal requirements for street legal registration, however that does not mean that you can't drive it on the road. There is always more than one way to skin a cat . . . so to speak.

In my state we do no 'register' agricultural tractors, but tractors are allowed to drive on the road under some conditions. We must have a SMV sign on the rear of the vehicle, we must have our lights on, we must yield to faster traffic as possible. I drive my Snow Trac on the roads in the winter months regularly, usually before the snowplows have a chance to get out to our area, but I simply follow the 'tractor' regulations and have had no problems. A SMV (slow moving vehicle) sign can be purchased at any local tractor dealership, Tractor Supply or Farm & Fleet stores in your area. Check your state's regulations for driving a tractor on the road.

Check with local DOT, here in Iowa you can not have metal parts of the tracks in contact with pavement. Otherwise it can be used like a farm tractor and no registration required. You might also register it as a "custom" vehicle, like a kit car.

the tracks have rubber inserts between the metal cleats so there would be no metal touching the tar.

Is the SMV sign, that reflective orange triangle on most tractors?

They sell stick on ones as well as metal ones with a mounting bracket. The latter is what you need as the SMV needs to be dead center on the rear, wide side downward. Don't forget reflectors on the side to keep from being run over. I use the red and white reflective tape sold for use on semi's. They are reasonable cost, stay on very good, and work very good.

Good advice.

Also, each state may have different lighting regulations. Some say that you must run with lights on, others say you must run with emergency flashers on while driving on the roads. It is best to check your state regulations for driving tractors on the roadway.

Please make certain the outer edges of your vehicle are marked with reflectors or lights. We just had someone killed because an idiot didn't do that. A farmer had a tractor, applicator, and anhydrous ammonia tank, in that order, on a road after dark. The tank was marked with a SMV sign, but no reflectors on applicator. The applicator was much wider than the ammonia tank, which is in turn much wider than a SMV sign.
