Removing Springs

I am in the process of converting a four car garage into my workshop, and I would like to remove two of the doors to provide additional useable wall space. These are manual lift doors with the large torsion springs mounted above them. When lifting the doors, they are still kind of heavy, so it seems like the springs are either weak, or not tensioned properly. Still, I have heard horror stories of people loosening these springs improperly, and getting hurt.

What is the best method to unload these springs so I can remove them and the doors?

I would call a garage door company and have them do it. The horror stories I've heard about when those springs break or fly loose keeps me away from messing with them.

What Bob said.

Good friend of mine broke his arm trying to retension his door spring.

Dave,

Yep, you need to be cautious but there's a trick to it.

If you can't do it this way, let me know and we'll do it the old fashion way.

Can you access your spring when the door is fully open? Either from rafters or from a gap when the door is fully open?

When the door is fully open, there is little or no tension on the spring and adjusting is easy and safe.
